NOTE: Heidi’s no longer open

22 02 2010

Our very first blog post featured what was one of my favorite places to recommend in Minneapolis: Heidi’s. Sadly, it burned last week and it sounds as though there are no plans to re-open.

A stubborn, slow-moving fire chewed through a bustling south Minneapolis street corner Thursday, destroying two popular gift shops, a pair of highly regarded restaurants and a jewelry design store.

“I started crying when I first got here,” said Mary Jane Mitchell, a neighbor who helplessly watched the fire that started in the kitchen of Heidi’s Minneapolis at W. 50th Street and Bryant Avenue S. The restaurant’s owner, Stewart Woodman, is one of the city’s star chefs. On Thursday morning, the James Beard Foundation named him one of 20 best Midwestern chef semifinalists for its 2010 awards, widely considered the Oscars of the food world.

Hours later, the restaurant named for his wife was being destroyed by fire. Woodman blogged about the fire on shefzilla.com today.
